Castles and cathedrals may be one thing, but in terms of man-made structures, your next stop at Stonehenge is truly extraordinary. This world-famous collection of huge stone monuments was built over 4,000 years ago, leaving one marvelling at the creativity and determination of those who created such a thing of beauty with just basic tools.

This evening you will be staying at The Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa, a masterful architectural triumph in its own right. Dinner reservations will be made in the hotel’s Dower House Restaurant, which has 3 AA Rosettes to its name and where you can expect fine dining of the highest order.

Thus, no visit is complete without stopping by Bath’s mightily impressive Roman Baths. One can’t help but imagine picturing the scene from thousands of years ago when the city’s elite would have relaxed and socialised here.

You will be staying in the Royal Crescent again this evening, however you will be dining at The Olive Tree Restaurant. Awarded Bath’s only Michelin Star in 2018, The Olive Tree continues to wow guests with dishes that are presented like artwork.

You will then stop in two of the Cotswolds most famous towns. First up is Chipping Camden where you can find St James’ church and the ancient High Street which dates back to the 14th century. Fans of arts and crafts will want to head to The Old Silk Mill, where a group of craftspeople have established a lively and creative co-operative.

From there you will head to Bibury. Locals and visitors alike regularly agree that Bibury is the gem in the Cotswolds crown owing to its understated yet unmistakable character and beauty. On the banks of the river Coln sits Arlington Row, a small group of cottages built in 1380 which are so pretty that Henry Ford tried to buy them to ship them to America! Thankfully, common sense prevailed, and they remain here for you to enjoy.

Henrock’s takes the use of local produce very seriously and even has its own farm in the nearby Cartmel Valley. Yet in 1957 much of the castle was demolished and left to ruin for over 50 years. Now, however, the remaining outer walls retain an undeniable charm. There are also magnificent gardens, an adventure playground for kids, and an exhibition telling the story of this unique castle.

From there you will be driven to Penrith, an old market town with a vibrant atmosphere and plenty of cafes, pubs, and independent stores.

You will then take a step back in time as you visit the Roman Vindolanda and Hadrian’s Wall. Vindolanda was a Roman Fort and is a crucial archaeological site which has allowed researchers to unearth so much knowledge about the Roman’s activities in England. There is a museum with innumerable treasures, the highlight of which are the Vindolanda Tablets, the oldest example of handwriting in the U.K.

Meanwhile, Hadrian’s Wall was built by the Romans to protect the north-western edge of their empire from the Pictish tribes of Scotland. It stretches across the entire width of England and allowed the Romans to control the movement of people.

After a day filled with castles and forts, tonight you will appropriately be staying in Augill Castle. Surrounded by woodland and finely furnished, Augill Castle is the ideal country retreat.
